Shaylene Johnson was beloved by many as a daughter, mother, sister, niece, granddaughter, friend, and colleague, but most importantly, as a proud Mi’kmaw woman. She was an exceptional mother, traditional singer and drummer, teacher, and cultural advocate.
Shaylene’s life was tragically cut short in connection with her work advocating for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, a cause she championed with passion. She was deeply self-aware of her culture and the vital role of women in Mi’kmaq life, and she eagerly shared this knowledge with others.
When her children were young, Shaylene introduced them to powwows, where they became dancers as soon as they could walk. Together, they traveled the powwow trail, a journey of cultural celebration and connection. Shaylene also created and shared regalia with others, generously ensuring anyone in need had the opportunity to participate in cultural events.
Her legacy lives on through her unwavering commitment to her culture, her community, and, most importantly, her children.
